Netflix appears to be doubling down in its showdown with critics, who have almost universally panned the streaming service’s new production “Bright.” Netflix confirmed plans today to move forward with a sequel to the movie.
David Ayer will write and direct the sequel, with Will Smith and Joel Edgerton expected to reprise their lead roles and Eric Newman and Bryan Unkeless on board as producers.
Despite being torched by critics, “Bright” has performed well for Netflix since it debuted on Dec. 22.
“‘Bright’ is the highest viewed Netflix film ever on the service in its first week of release and one of the biggest originals (including sequels/additional seasons) Netflix has ever launched,” the streamer said in today’s announcement, adding: “‘Bright’ is the #1 movie on Netflix in every country (190+ countries) since its release with more people viewing the film internationally than domestically.”
