Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny return for another round of “The X-Files.”

TV picks for Wednesday, Jan. 3

WATCH THIS:

“The X-Files” (8 p.m., Fox): The truth is apparently still out there. The groundbreaking sci-fi/suspense saga returns again in “event-series” form as Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson) learn that they aren’t the only ones desperately searching for their long-lost son, William. But where is he, exactly? The 10-episode season will be booked-ended by episodes directly tied to the core mythology. The eight hours in between are stand-alone “monster of the week” installments.

“grown-ish” (8 p.m., Freeform): You’ve seen “black-ish.” Now get ready for “grown-ish.” It’s a spin-off comedy series that follows Zoey (Yara Shahidi), the Johnsons’ popular, entitled, stylish and socially active 17-year- old daughter, as she heads into her freshman year of college.

“The Amazing Race” (8 p.m., CBS): The globe-trotting competition series kicks off its milestone 30th season from Washington Square Park in New York City. Then the teams travel to their first destination, Iceland, where they must traverse a massive canyon high above the Geitargljufur River.

“The Blacklist” (8 p.m., NBC): In the midseason premiere, Liz abandons her old life and seeks out a fresh start in a place where no one knows her history, her name or the depths of her grief. When an unexpected threat finds her, she is forced to draw on her emotional and physical strength in a brutal fight for survival.

“Speechless” (8:30 p.m., ABC): Jimmy convinces Maya to go on a much-needed night out together where they drink through Maya’s urge to rush home to the kids. Back at the house, Ray and Kenneth avoid being alone with their dates, while JJ, sidelined by a broken wheelchair, ends up getting more excitement than he expected.

“9-1-1” (9 p.m., Fox): This new procedural drama delves into the high-stakes experiences of police officers, paramedics and firefighters. It features a standout cast headed by Angela Bassett, Peter Krause and Connie Britton.

“Modern Family” (9 p.m., ABC): Claire’s request to build a “She Shed” in their backyard is denied by the homeowners association and only Luke and Phil know the real reason why. Meanwhile Pameron lets Cam in on a family secret that forces him to visit Mitch’s therapist to work through this new information.

“Laff Mobb’s Laff Tracks” (11 p.m., truTV): This new show delivers a fun twist to the standard stand-up comedy series by bringing the comedians’ jokes to life in an over-the-top “visual recreation.” DJ and comedian Cipha Sounds is our host.
