The triple talaq bill, or the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2017, which seeks to criminalise instant divorce or uttering of talaq thrice for Muslims, was tabled in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.

The bill was passed in the Lok Sabha last week with most of the Opposition parties, including the Congress, voting in favour. However, opposition parties have demanded that the bill be sent to a select committee to be rectified before being brought into force.
