My Rescue Pet: Perkins the bunny groom

The SPCA hopes that more of the 46,000 animals coming through its doors each year will find new homes. This summer, the Herald profiles animals that have been adopted and their owners as part of our My Rescue Pet series.

Perkins was found hopping around a West Auckland train station car park all alone.

By the time he arrived at the SPCA he was badly injured with bite wounds on his shoulder.

Perkins had to spend a lot of time in hospital and then struggled to put on the weight he needed to survive.

So small animal attendant Justine Somerville took Perkins home so she could give him the one-on-one care he so desperately needed.

It was not long until she fell in love with him.

One of her own bunnies passed away recently leaving girl bunny Priya on her own. So Somerville introduced Perkins to Priya in the hope they would fall in love.

It turns out Perkins and Priya are a match made in heaven and were given a bunny-themed wedding ceremony to celebrate their new partnership.
