NPL has an exciting opportunity for an experienced and motivated Health Physicist to provide radiation protection support across the organisation, supporting a wide range of research and commercial activities which involve the use and handling of radioactive sources and products. The successful candidate will be expected to work with our Radiation Protection Advisor, and local management, to ensure that the use of radioactive sources and material is managed in accordance with NPL’s health & safety and radiation protection policies, and relevant regulation and legislation. You will be responsible for continual improvement in our radiation protection policies to ensure that they are fit-for-purpose and for implementing internal training programmes, where necessary. Other responsibilities will include acting as a point-of-contact for the Environment Agency and the Health Safety Executive, and reporting to the relevant bodies.
The successful candidate will have demonstrable experience of implementing safety procedures and policies to address the requirements of EPR16 & IRR99, including an awareness of IRR17, and in providing robust radiation protection guidance, ideally in a research environment, and will have a degree in a relevant subject. Direct experience of working with HASS regulations and reporting to EURATOM would be advantageous, as would experience of managing radioactive waste disposal. Good written and oral communication skills, and the ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team are a prerequisite for this role.
