What have we learned ...
And now the Jets season is over.
The final step in 2017 concluded on Tuesday, with general manager Mike Maccagnan and acting owner Christopher Johnson meeting the media. The next team-oriented event won't take place until April's draft. After that, it's organized team activities, minicamp, training camp ...
You get the point.
So with things finally wrapped up, we took a look at what we learned on Tuesday. Here's everything from Christian Hackenberg to Muhammad Wilkerson, with a helping of playoff talk in between.
The Jets aren't happy with Muhammad Wilkerson
Maccagnan and Johnson kept to the company line when asked about Wilkerson, but you could clearly see their frustration. At first mention of the chronically-late defensive end, Johnson took an 11-second pause -- 11 seconds! -- before dancing around an answer.
Wilkerson's time with the Jets is coming to a close. They'll cut him as soon as they can. It seems unlikely he gets a tribute video if he happens to return to MetLife Stadium with his new team.
Not giving up on Christian Hackenberg
The Jets drafted Christian Hackenberg in the second round in 2016. He hasn't played a regular season snap since. Seriously. According to ESPN, Hackenberg is now one of just three quarterbacks since 1967 to be drafted in the first two rounds, then not play their first two seasons.
Gene Bradley (second-round pick by the Bills in 1980) and Jim Kelly (first-round pick by the Bills in 1983) are the other two. Kelly gets an asterisk, though. He played his first three years in the USFL.
Maccagnan, though, isn't ready to give up on Hackenberg.
"I don't think I'm necessarily disappointed," Maccagnan said. "I don't think his final chapter has been written yet. This is going to be an important offseason for him. I think there's still potential in him."
