As temperatures began falling into dangerously cold territory across Volusia and Flagler counties on Wednesday, non-profit organizations rushed to get shelters ready to open.

Bunnell: The Sheltering Tree, First United Methodist Church in Bunnell, opens daily at 5:30 p.m. at 205 North Pine St., Bunnell, when temperatures are below 40 degrees. Dinner at 6 p.m.

DeLand: St. Peter Catholic Church, opening 8 p.m. Wednesday, 359 W New York Ave, DeLand, FL 32720

Daytona Beach: Halifax Urban Ministries Family Shelter distributing bankets, jackets, socks, caps and gloves at 340 North St. and 215 Bay St.

New Smyrna Beach: Those interested in a Halifax Urban Ministries shelter there must register each night between 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. at the United Church of Christ, 200 Faulkner Street, where they'll be provided the location of the shelter for the night.
