LAKELAND — Ken Huebner, the first All-American in Florida Southern baseball history, died in Hawthorne, N.J., on Dec. 30.
The 73-year-old was thrice the Mocs' team MVP as a pitcher and outfielder during his playing days from 1963-65. Huebner was the first modern-day player to hit .400 when he did so in 1964 and his career average of .376 stood as the top mark in program history for 14 years. He finished his career with a 1.45 ERA, the lowest in Florida Southern history. Huebner was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 31st round in 1965 and spent eight seasons in the minors, primarily as an outfielder.
He was inducted into the FSC Athletics Hall of Fame in 2002 and his No. 43 jersey is retired.
