OAKVILLE — A man was killed about 9 a.m. today in a head-on collision with a semi-tractor trailer when the vehicle he was driving crossed the center line southbound on Des Moines County Highway 99.
The name of the victim, believed to be an Illinois man, has not been released pending notification of family.
The driver of the northbound semi-tractor suffered minor injuries, but did not require treatment. His name has not been released.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Emergency crews had to use extrication equipment to cut him from his mangled vehicle, which came to a rest in the ditch on the west side of the road.
The semi, after colliding with the vehicle, left the roadway and stopped in a ditch several hundred yards north of the initial impact. Debris from the collision was scattered for more than 200 yards on the roadway.
The Iowa State Patrol, Des Moines County Sheriff's office and a Des Moines County medical examiner were on the scene, along with at least two fire departments.
The accident occurred just north of Huron Road, south of Oakville. Roads near the accident remained closed about 11:30 a.m. while state troopers investigated the fatality accident.
Additional information is expected to be released later today.
