A Gaffney man suspected of murdering his ex-girlfriend has died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Shecky Lamar Tate, of 704 Hetty Hill St., died Tuesday afternoon after Gaffney police officers went to his home to serve a warrant for his arrest, Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler said.

Tate, 34, was wanted in connection to the shooting death of Sametra Achelle Dawkins, 30, of Overbrook Drive. Dawkins was shot and killed outside her home Nov. 9, 2016.

When officers went to go inside Tate’s home, he tried to exit through the back door where officers were already standing. He went back inside and that’s when officers heard a gunshot, according to a statement from the Gaffney Police Department.

He was found lying on the floor with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, Fowler said.

Tate was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gaffney police first announced Tate as the suspect in Dawkins’ death on Nov. 13 and had been seeking him since then.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.

Since officers were on scene to serve the warrant at the time of the shooting, the State Law Enforcement Division has been called in to investigate the death.
