SURAT: A group of around 40 people returning from Bhima Koregaon in
Maharashtra arrived in the diamond city on Wednesday. They took out a rally from
Udhna railway station to statue of
Baba Ambedkar on
Ring Road in association with the Dalit groups from city to register protest against the violence. In a form of rally a local group also blocked road in Vapi of Valsad.
In the rally that was planned without intimating local administration around 500 people have joined. The rally dispersed at Man Darwaja after offering garland to the statue. Local Dalit groups have joined those returning from Bhima Koregaon in the rally.
After gathering at Udhna railway station the group first went on railway track and stopped a goods trains. They later came out and started rally by walking through Udhna main road. The rally gheraod at
BJP office and shouted slogans against BJP. After reaching the Baba Ambedkar statue the rally blocked traffic on both side of Ring Road for few minutes. Later police teams cleared the road.
Police have installed heavy bandobast soon after the supporters started gathering at the starting point of rally near railway station. Teams of detection of crime branch, prevention of crime branch, special operation group and local police were providing security to the rally to avoid any disturbance.
"We are returning from Bhima Koregaon and a peaceful rally by Dalits was attacked. We are organising a rally in Surat to register protest against the violence," said a member of the participating group from Amreli district of Gujarat.
"A group of people started gathering in Udhna after which police approached them and they informed that they want to register protest through a peaceful rally in regard to Maharashtra incident. Police provided tight bandobast to ensure that the rally is completed without disturbance," said
