Larry E. Westphalen, 76, of Sioux City, died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2017 at his residence.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 4 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Sioux City. Graveside services will be held on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at St. Paul Hanover Cemetery near Ricketts, Iowa. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. with a prayer service held at 7 p.m. at the church. Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Larry was born in Crawford County, Iowa on Oct. 27, 1941, the son of Edlef and Sophie (Rabe) Westphalen. He attended and graduated from Schleswig Schools. He then attended the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, where he received his degree in accounting. He then received his designation as a certified public accountant. Larry proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Navy from 1962-64.
He was united in marriage with Shirley Rix on May 10, 1964 in Lytton, Iowa. The family moved to Sioux City in 1970 from Burlington, Iowa, then moved to their farm, just east of Sioux City in 1972. He also had his own accounting business, Larry E. Westphalen CPA. Larry was an active member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, where he enjoyed participating in worship praising God. He enjoyed reading, playing cards, farming and spending time with all of his family.
Those left behind to cherish his life and memories are his wife, Shirley; his children, Mike Westphalen and his wife, Stephanie; Judy Stanton and her husband, Scott; Dan Westphalen and his wife, Bridget; Sarah Westphalen; Mark Westphalen; and Rachel Wolfe and her husband, Jason. Larry is also survived by his seven grandchildren; a brother, Russell Westphalen and a sister, Inez Mohr.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two infant grandchildren, one brother and four sisters.
