A frenzied honorary lieutenant went on a killing spree in the early hours of Tuesday murdering seven people sleeping in the open cold, all in less than an hour, in Haryana's Palwal district on Tuesday.

The former soldier had an iron rod in his hand and walked through the streets killing one after another in a quick interval.

All the bodies were found within a 100-metre span. He used the rod to smash the heads of people, who were braving the biting cold of the night.

The deceased lay in a pool of blood with multiple injuries. The accused, Naresh Dhankar (42), who was later arrested, is believed to be mentally unstable.

Sources added that many of his victims were beaten up mercilessly by him before he smashed their heads.

The accused had no connection or hostility with any of the deceased, which included two-night watchmen and a beggar.

The accused is a native of Faridabad. The news of the gory incident has sent shock waves through the township pf Palwal.

Dhankar even attacked the police officers who finally spotted him. The policemen had a tough time overpowering him.

His first victim was a woman attendant who was sleeping outside a ward in the civil hospital.

After this murder, the accused managed to escape.

He finally stopped the madness after killing six more people.

After retiring from the army, Dhankar was appointed as a sub-divisional officer in the state public health department some years ago.

He was asked to leave the army on medical grounds, after streaks of unsound behaviour.

The accused has a wife and an 8-year-old son. On the basis of the preliminary investigation, the police said the crime was committed without motive.
