PEORIA — A car vs. train accident in Pekin had several intersections blocked Wednesday morning, police said.

According to spokeswoman Billie Ingles of the Pekin Police Department, the accident occurred at 9:12 a.m. at the intersection of Second and Caroline Street. No one was hurt but the accident snarled traffic in the city.

Ingles said she didn't know what the train was carrying, what train company it was with or how the accident happened. It involved a passenger vehicle and the train which was headed north when the accident occurred.

The car has since been removed but the train was stuck on the tracks until an inspector from the train company could arrive to make sure it was safe to move the cars. The train was blocking intersections from Second and Caroline all the way back to Second and Cook streets, Ingles said.

Scanner radio traffic indicated that police in Pekin were seeking to close the Route 9 or Pekin Bridge from Peoria into Pekin as there "was no place for the traffic to go." Peoria County sheriff's deputies and Illinois State Police were assisting with traffic.
