Mateusz Morawiecki thinks he can lure Polish millennials home

Mateusz Morawiecki believes Polish millennials in residential limbo in Britain will be tempted to return by the European Union nation’s fast-growing economy.

The new PM has already lured banks like Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan to Warsaw with incentives to banks and funds to relocate to the city.

And Google opened its startup campus for Central and Eastern Europe in the Polish capital back in 2015.

A report by McKinsey & Company found that Poland lags behind just the UK, France and Germany in the EU in terms of its IT graduate network.

Earlier this year Mr Morawieki said: “We are drawing jobs away from London towards [Poland], so that people can stay here, and our programmes are helping emigration [from Poland] to fall to record lows.”

However, Marcin Zientek, a Polish entrepreneur and the head of London-based business consultancy firm Zientek Global, told Politico: “The majority of people here [in London] still say, ‘We’re not moving. It’s the place to be.”

Earlier in the year then-Deputy Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki claimed Poland would attract up to 30,000 jobs from Britain’s financial sector.

He said: “Some time ago Poles were departing to London, but now it is the other way round — we estimate that we will attract from the British islands 25,000-30,000 new jobs in the sector of advanced services for business this year.”

But the EU’s condemnation of the ruling Law and Justice Party, and threats of sanctions, has worsened the country’s image abroad.

Many young Poles have a “different orientation politically” from the party, claimed Paweł Chudzinski, a Polish partner at a Berlin-based venture capital fund

London also has a much more business friendly environment, compared to Poland’s unpredictable regulatory system.

Poland is desperate for workers to return having seen their population drop by more than one million, around 5 per cent, since it joined the EU in 2004 and according to the Union of Entrepreneurs and Employers Poland needs five million addition workers to sustain its economic growth.

Mr Morawiecki last month said: “We are likely to achieve this year a growth rate of over four percent.”

More than 5,000 Poles are studying at universities across the UK, but with the UK expected to crack down on visas for foreign students, these graduates may return to Polish shores for career opportunities.
