Menon being replaced by Kamal at cabinet

- Menon’s new portfolio not clear

- More changes to cabinet very likely

Bangladesh’s cabinet is undergoing more changes, with the latest being the replacement at Civil Aviation and Tourism Ministry, with hints lingering on more to follow.

AKM Shahjahan Kamal, a lawmaker from Laxmipur sworn in to the cabinet yesterday, will be replacing leftist leader Rashed Khan Menon as minister of the ministry.

Highly placed sources at the civil aviation ministry told The Daily Star the change is going to take place “soon”, without specifying where Menon, serving as the minister since 2014, is being moved.

Contacted, Rashed Khan Menon told The Daily Star that he “has heard about the replacement”, but could not provide any specifics as to where he will be moved to next after it comes to effect.

AKM Shahjahan Kamal has confirmed The Daily Star of the development and said Cabinet Secretary M Shafiul Alam called him up this afternoon to inform him about his new portfolio.

While it is not clear whether Workers Party Chairman Rashed Khan Menon will remain in the cabinet at all, he has been seen participating in the weekly cabinet meeting held today.

This third major change in Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s cabinet after she re-assumed office in 2014 is taking place on the final year of her government ahead of the parliamentary election.

Additionally, there are hints that more changes are coming to Sheikh Hasina’s cabinet.

A senior minister of the cabinet has told The Daily Star on condition of anonymity that changes are also likely to be seen at the Ministry of Water Resource, headed by Minister Anisul Islam Mahmud.

Also, unconfirmed sources have also spoken of a likelihood of another change in another ministry.
