WEIGHT, WHAT? Eating fat as a part of a balanced diet is better than cutting it completely

One in four Brits are obese – and the fact that there’s plenty of diet myths out there doesn’t help matters.

Many slimmers turn to in attempt to lose weight, but this could actually be doing more harm than good.

Medical experts, who spoke to Channel 5’s Diet Secrets and How to Lose Weight, revealed the truth about these diet products.

While attempting to cut calories, dieters often opt for low fat versions of their favourite foods.

Sadly, these products can be packed with sugar to make them taste better.

Too many of these low fat items can actually contribute to obesity rather than tackling it.

Doctors also revealed that can be damaging.

It’s important to have a healthy balance when it comes to these food groups, instead of “demonising” them.

Priya Tew, a nutritional scientist, said: “It’s OK and safe to eat a certain amount of healthy fats.”

These unsaturated products include avocados, nuts, fish and olives.

Dr Linia Patel added: “You have some fats that are called the essential fats, these are like the vitamins of the fat world – like omega-3.

“They’re essential because we need to get them from our diet for our body because our bodies can’t actually make them themselves.”

NO NEED TO BE CHEESED OFF: You don't have to cut fats from your diet

While the diet-conscious are probably aware that there are “good” and “bad” fats, saturated food doesn’t have to be avoided completely.

Dr Patel said: “We labelled saturated fat as a bad fat, but it’s not a bad fat if we eat it in the right portions.”

Dietician Pixie Turner agreed: “Cheese for example, yes it contains some saturated fat, but it also gives us things like calcium, it gives us protein.

“Overall it is actually an extremely nutritious food.”

Foods that have a natural fat content don’t have to be avoided, but it is best to cut back in transfats.

These products are man-made and it’s always important to check if they’re listed on your food labels.

Transfats, which are often found in fast food, are difficult for our bodies to digest.

For this reason, they’re stored in our systems, which can make us gain weight.
