Research Associate

£36,800 – £44,220 p.a.

Campus: Hammersmith

The Knöpfel lab for Neuronal Circuit Dynamics within the Department of Medicine at Imperial College London is seeking a highly-motivated, outstanding Postdoctoral Research Associate to participate in NIH-funded non-clinical neuroscience research projects studying brain circuits using optogenetics and optical imaging. The work is to be performed under the auspices of the BRAIN Initiative grant.

The Knopfel lab uses a variety of techniques to focus on neuronal circuit mechanisms in the cerebral and cerebellar cortices. In particular, the lab had developed and used genetically encoded voltage indicators to study neuronal circuit activity in vitro and in vivo. For this exciting position, we plan to use near infrared genetically encoded voltage indicators, which, for the first time, can be efficiently combined with blue-light activated activating or silencing opsins, to enable an all-optical approach that expands classical microelectrode-based intracellular single cell current-clamp recordings.

Candidates should hold a PhD, or equivalent experience, in neuroscience, or a related field, with a strong, high quality publication record. Prior experience in one or several of the following fields would be advantageous: molecular biology and primary neuronal culture, brain slice electrophysiology, and optical imaging and computational methods. The successful applicant should have an outstanding passion for research, and work well in a team.

For informal enquiries or questions about the role, please contact Professor Thomas Knöpfel at tknopfel@knopfel-lab.net

The contract is offered on a full-time, fixed-term basis for 12 months, with the possibility of extension subject to availability of funds and on-going research needs. Contract duration can be discussed with Professor Knopfel.
