Storm Eleanor damage in pictures as 100mph gales wreak havoc across the UK

STORM Eleanor has pounded the UK with hurricane-force winds and torrential rain, leaving devastation in its wake. Here are the latest pictures of the storm damage.

Gale-force winds of up to 100mph uprooted trees and sent debris flying across streets, while tens of thousands of homes were left without power.

caused widespread flooding with the latest pictures showing floodwater engulfing Irish towns and huge waves crashing through the doors of a gallery in Cornwall.

More than 55,000 properties in the Republic of Ireland and 20,000 customers in Northern Ireland lost power after bearing the brunt of the storm.

There are also fears thousands of pounds of art are ruined after Porthminster Gallery, St Ives, was hit by 80mph winds.

Cornwall has been battered by Storm Eleanor with families stacking sandbags against their front doors in desperation and damage estimated to run into millions of pounds.

Large waves also surged in other coastal areas with pictures showing Porthcawl Lighthouse in Porthcawl, Wales, being lashed by the high seas.

In England’s South-East, a “large number” of trees fell across major roads, according to highway crews, causing headaches for early morning commuters and lorry drivers.

Two lanes were closed over the Queen Elizabeth II bridge and Dartford Crossing, between Ken and Essex, as a result of the strong winds.

Overturned vehicles caused road closures in many areas including the M6 near Lancaster, M5 near Worcester and the A1M near Hatfield in Hertfordshire.

Huge parts of Kent were flooded after 60mph winds while fallen power lines and poles were broken by the gale-force winds.

A Met Office yellow warning for high winds is in for large swathes of England as well as Wales and parts of Northern Ireland.
