ISLAMABAD: There has been a large-scale condemnation of President Donald Trump’s tweet in which he repeated his accusations against Pakistan.
Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan told reporters that Trump did not have control over his words. He said Pakistan committed blunders by becoming part of the anti-terror war, adding that Pakistan sustained losses of $130 billion and lost thousands of lives.
Reacting to Trump’s allegations against Pakistan, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhuttoi Zardari said the US is no longer interested in defeating terrorism.
In a string of tweets, he said cutting off money Pakistan owes for the assistance it has already rendered doesn’t encourage further co-operation.
In a reference to US president’s claim that Washington has given more than $33 billion in aid over the last 15 years to Islamabad, Bilawal said: “Someone please explain to @realDonaldTrump difference between coalition support fund reimbursement for work done & US aid ostensibly given for humanitarian reasons, to win hearts and minds.”
Bilawal called for Islamabad to “articulate and implement a counter violent extremism strategy not because of what the US wants but because we need to succeed.”
“We also have to come to terms with the fact, US is no longer interested in defeating terrorism.”
“The United States has foolishly given Pakistan more than $33 billion in aid over the last 15 years, and they have given us nothing but lies & deceit, thinking of our leaders as fools,” Trump said as the New Year kicked off.
“They give safe haven to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan, with little help. No more!”
Meanwhile, Beijing defended Islamabad on expected lines.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry said Pakistan had made sacrifices in combating terrorism and the international community should notice the efforts made by Islamabad.
“Pakistan has made very outstanding contributions to the global cause of counter-terrorism. The international community should acknowledge that,” Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said.
China’s has invested heavily in Pakistan, with a key artery of its Belt and Road project passing through its territory.
“China and Pakistan are all-weather partners and we stand ready to promote and deepen our all-round cooperation so as to bring benefits to the two sides,” the spokesperson said.
