Nick in the AM: Early-morning fire forces South Peoria residents from home

A house fire early Wednesday in South Peoria injured nobody but caused about $15,000 in damage, authorities stated.

About 5 a.m., Peoria fire and paramedic crews reported to 1001 S. Shelley St. and found heavy smoke emanating from the second floor of a 2½-story wood-frame residence, according to a report.

Firefighters found flames in and around a bedroom closet, the report stated. It took about 15 minutes to bring the fire under control.

The residents had exited the house by the time firefighters arrived, according to the report. The American Red Cross is assisting the residents.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
