GUWAHATI: A Muslim organisation on Wednesday lodged an FIR against an Assam BJP legislator for allegedly saying the first draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) contains the names of many illegal migrants from Bangladesh. "It's sad that Shiladitya Dev, despite being a public representative, made such a wrong statement.
He has shown disrespect to the Supreme Court, which is monitoring the NRC process. By making such a statement, he has tried to fuel enmity among people on religion lines," Moinul Haque, general secretary of a students organisation, said. The youth and student council of indigenous Muslims in the state, after lodging the FIR, alleged that Dev's statement was meant to create confusion among people.
Police commissioner Hiren Nath said, "Based on the FIR, Latasil Police have registered a case and action will be taken." Since Dev allegedly made the statement on TV channels, police are not collecting audio-visual clippings. In such cases, a convict gets jail term up to three years with fine or both. An MLA from Hojai, Dev's name didn't figure in the first draft of NRC.
