UNION TOWNSHIP — A Hammond man accused of stabbing another man Wednesday in the Shorewood Forest subdivision allegedly fled across county lines in a stolen pickup truck before his early morning arrest by Hobart police.
The suspect, 22, is now in custody at Lake County Jail.
Deputies with the Porter County Sheriff's Department said they responded just before 3:45 a.m. to the 400 block of Roxbury Road after receiving an anonymous 911 call of a possible stabbing.
An initial investigation shows the victim — a 36-year-old man from Union Township — was stabbed multiple times by the suspect, who fled the area.
The victim was driven by family to Methodist Hospitals Southlake Campus in Merrillville with stab wounds to his back and arm. The injuries were not considered life-threatening, police said.
As officers checked the area, attempting to ping the suspect's cellphone, Hobart police said at about 5:40 a.m. that they had the suspect in custody.
The stabbing suspect reportedly shoplifted in Hobart's jurisdiction and fled the area in a stolen vehicle, striking several Hobart squad cars in the process.
Porter County deputies discovered the vehicle was stolen out of Porter County less than a quarter-mile from the stabbing scene on Roxbury Road.
The suspect has several existing warrants in Lake County for a level 5 drug offense and in Porter Couty for criminal mischief, a Class B misdemeanor.
Charges associated with the stabbing are pending while the suspect sits at Lake County Jail on his initial arrest warrant with a hold for Porter County on his original warrant.
Investigators remained on scene executing a search warrant and interviewing witnesses late afternoon Wednesday.
Because the suspect has not been formally charged in Wednesday's stabbing, The Times is not identifying him.
