PennDOT is planning to replace the White Horse Road bridge over Pickering Creek beginning mid-January.
Construction is scheduled to begin Wednesday, Jan. 17, to replace the structurally-deficient bridge carrying White Horse Road over a branch of Pickering Creek in Schuylkill Township, Chester County, PennDOT announced.
The new structure is expected to open in April 2018.
PennDOT’s contractor will replace the deteriorated bridge with a concrete rigid frame structure as well as upgrade all safety features. The new bridge will be 13 feet long and 24 feet wide. The existing single-span structure was built in 1927. The concrete encased steel I-beam bridge is 11 feet long and 22 feet wide, and carries an average of 4,671 vehicles a day.
Due to the scope of construction, White Horse Road will be closed and detoured between Loramar Lane and Valley Park Road. During the three-month bridge closure, White Horse Road motorists will be directed to use Pothouse Road and Route 29 (State Road/Morehall Road) to detour around the construction site.
This bridge replacement is being performed under PennDOT’s $11,766,000 project to rehabilitate five structurally-deficient bridges in Bucks, Chester, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties, and replace six structurally-deficient culverts in Bucks, Chester and Delaware counties.
The bridges currently under construction include:
• Rocky Ridge Road over a branch of Tohickon Creek in Richland Township, Bucks County;
• Route 113 (Souderton Road) over Mill Creek in Hilltown Township, Bucks County; and
• Route 282 (Creek Road) over a branch of Brandywine Creek in East Brandywine Township, Chester County.
Structures completed under this project include:
• Henry Avenue over Wissahickon Creek in Philadelphia;
• The historic Loux Covered Bridge over Cabin Run on Carver-Wismer Road in Bedminster Township, Bucks County;
• Oxford Valley Road over U.S. 1 in Falls, Lower Makefield and Middletown townships, Bucks County;
• Route 663 (Layfield Road) bridge over Green Lane Reservoir Creek in Upper Hanover Township, Montgomery County;
• Edenton Road bridge over Rattlesnake Run in Upper Oxford Township, Chester County;

Work on the entire project is expected to be completed in August 2018.
