“What we need is diplomacy between the United States, China and North Korea to supplement that or to lead that. And there, the president’s tweets have made it more difficult for diplomacy to work,” the senator added.
North Korea on Wednesday reportedly revived a communication channel after South Korea proposed talks with its northern neighbor ahead of the upcoming winter Olympics.
“We know that the only reasonable solution to the North Korean crisis is through diplomacy,” Cardin said. “And the president’s tweets make that more challenging.”
Trump has swapped insults with Kim Jong Un, repeatedly referring to the North Korean leader as “rocket man.”
Late Tuesday, the president boasted that he has “a much bigger” nuclear button than Kim.
“North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un just stated that the ‘Nuclear Button is on his desk at all times,’” Trump said.
“Will someone from his depleted and food starved regime please inform him that I too have a Nuclear Button, but it is a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!”
