Burlington schools will have a two-hour early dismissal Thursday for the funeral service of a student who died over winter break.
Michael Davis Jr., 12, was killed in a car accident Dec. 24 outside Geneseo, Illinois.
The funeral service for Davis will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in the auditorium at Aldo Leopold Middle School, where Davis was a sixth-grader.
Burlington High School and Aldo and Edward Stone middle schools will release at 1 p.m.; Grimes, Corse and North Hill elementary schools will release at 1:30 p.m.; and Black Hawk and Sunnyside elementary schools will release at 1:45 p.m. There will be no afternoon preschool.
Transportation Director Alan Mehaffy has arranged for buses to take students from the high school, elementary schools and Ed Stone to Aldo for the service. Those who do not attend will be able to take their regular buses home.
"We're trying to walk that line between the wishes of the mother and the father and the deceased child, and we feel the best way to do that is with an early out," Superintendent Pat Coen said. "We apologize for any inconvenience that it may cause."
Parents of children who do attend the service are encouraged to attend.
A luncheon will follow the service at North Hill Elementary School, where Davis attended kindergarten through fifth grade.
