LAKE WALES — A 44-year-old Lake Wales woman died early Monday when the airboat in which she was riding on Crooked Lake struck a barbed-wire fence.
Stephanie Wright died at the scene, said Melody Kilborn, spokeswoman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Three others on the boat, including one juvenile, were treated for injuries they received in the accident.
The collision occurred about 1:40 a.m. on New Year’s Day, Kilborn said. Pilots with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office assisted from the air in finding the airboat, while deputies and crews with Polk County Fire Rescue provided assistance on the ground.
The commission is continuing to the death investigation, Kilborn said, but no foul play is suspected at this time.
