Fiona the hippo turns 1: Cincinnati Zoo plans birthday bash


The Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden is planning a special birthday bash for their hippopotamus Fiona.

The zoo is planning to celebrate Fiona’s first birthday with an event scheduled for Jan. 20, just four days before Fiona’s official Jan. 24 birthday.

“You’ve been with us since day 1, following the journey of premature baby hippo Fiona. Now it’s time to celebrate! Our little hippo turns one on Jan 24, but we’re celebrating on Saturday, Jan 20! Make sure to wear your #TeamFiona gear to the party!” the zoo posted in an event Facebook page.

To celebrate the hippo’s first birthday, the zoo will be offering a number of events and giveaways. The first 1,000 families to visit will receive a free hippo bath mat. Throughout the day people will also be able to get commemorative Fiona foot stamps, birthday cake and Graeter’s Ice Cream, according to the event’s Facebook page.

Visitors will even get to sign a birthday card for Fiona from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Hippo Cove at the zoo. Below is a list of activities and their times during the birthday celebration.

Sign Fiona’s birthday card: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Hippo Cove

Busken cake and cookies: 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. (while supplies last)

Graeter’s ice cream: 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. (while supplies last)

Hippo care team members available for chats: 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Specialists from Children’s Hospital who helped save Fiona: 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
