A 21-year-old man charged over a fatal south Canberra car crash last night has denied he was behind the wheel.

Police allege Kane David Kell was driving northbound along Yarra Glen in Hughes last night when the car rolled and ended up in the southbound lanes about 6:00pm.

One person, who police allege was a passenger, died at the scene.

Kell and his girlfriend allegedly fled the crash but were taken into custody at 10:30pm after police had called on the public to help find the pair.

Kell was charged with culpable driving causing death, driving while disqualified, failing to give assistance and driving more than 30 kilometres over the speed limit.

But today he told the ACT Magistrate's Court the person who died was the driver.

His bail application was refused and he will return to court later this month.

The death is the first on the ACT's roads for 2018.

ACT Policing's Sergeant Marcus Boorman said yesterday he did not know what caused the driver to lose control and the car to roll.

A bus became stuck on the median street when the road was closed in both directions last night, but was later freed.
