Tuesday marks 12 year anniversary of Sago Mine Disaster

(WTRF) - Tuesday marks 12 years since the Sago Mine Disaster.

On January 2nd, 2006, 13 miners became trapped in the Upshur County mine after an explosion.

The miners were stuck underground for two days. Only one survived.

This tragic event goes down in history as one of the worst mining disasters in West Virginia.

Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia released a statement on the anniversary of the explosion saying in part:

"I think of those miners and the strength and sacrifices of their families each and every day, and my thoughts and prayers are with them and their loved ones on this sad anniversary. After Sago, we worked to improve mine safety by passing historic legislation and today we are reminded that, now more than ever, we must defend the mine safety improvements that have saved lives and protected our miners' health and kept them out of harm's way."
