EC receives notice on vacant Lepar state seat (Updated)

KUANTAN: The Election Commission (EC) was today officially notified of the Lepar state being vacant following the death of its incumbent assemblyman, Datuk Mohd Shohaimi Jusoh, last Sunday.
Pahang EC director, Datuk Zamree Hamli said he received the notice from State Legislative Assembly Speaker, Datuk Seri Ishak Muhammad at the latter’s office at 11.40am.
Under Article 26(5), Section II of the Pahang State Constitution, an unexpected vacancy of a state assembly seat cannot be filled within two years the assembly is to be dissolved, unless the Speaker informs the EC in writing on the need to fill the vacancy.
"Based on the notice received, the Speaker did not state the need to fill that vacancy," Zamree said when contacted, here, today.
Mohd Shohaimi, 55, passed away at his house in Sungai Isap Damai, here, at 4.15am last Sunday after having fever for a week.
In the last general, Mohd Shohaimi from Barisan Nasional won big, garnering 8,022 votes against PKR's Jefri Tukemin (4,306 votes) and Independent candidate, Kamarzaman Yunus (65 votes). — Bernama
