Federer beat Yuichi Sugita on Saturday in straight sets, showing very little ring-rust in a 6-4, 6-3 win in front of a rapturous crowd.
The 36-year-old is set to return to action today to face Khachanov in the singles element of the Hopman Cup clash between Switzerland and Russia.
Win or lose, Federer will be back later this week as well to play the final round-robin match of the week against the USA team. However, it is not clear who he will face after Jack Sock retired midway through his match against Sugita earlier today.
