On Monday, at Mumbai airport, a CEO or Chief Executive Officer of a technology firm in the United States was arrested for allegedly making a hoax call about the bomb. He had called a helpline number and had apparently, asked for the “BOM-DEL” flight status. As reported by The Times of India, Vinod Moorjani who is a US citizen of Indian origin was at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai and had made a call to a toll-free number to check the status of a BOM-DEL flight since a number of flights were getting cancelled and delayed because of bad weather conditions. He asked the operator for the “BOM-DEL” flight status, the abbreviation used to refer to the Mumbai-Delhi route. The operator had asked him to repeat himself when he disconnected the call since the operator could not fathom what he said, she heard Vinod Moorjani say “bomb hai” before hanging up.
Vinod Moorjani was supposed to take a flight to Delhi from Mumbai along with his wife and two children. They were to fly to Delhi and then take another flight from Delhi to Rome before returning home to Virginia, in the United States. Vinod Moorjani had made the call at 2.30m pm to the operator and at around 4.30 pm, he and his family were offloaded from the flight to Delhi. He was arrested two hours later. Vinod Moorjani was produced in court on Monday and was released with a bail of Rs 15,000. Vinod Moorjani maintains that he only asked for the flight status but the operator misunderstood which led to this fiasco. The police, however, maintains that he made the hoax call to disrupt schedules. Apparently, this is not the first time that the “BOM” abbreviation has led to a bomb scare. Maybe the best way would be to find a solution to this recurring problem.
