Dhaka University shuts TSC tea stalls

Cites security concerns

Dhaka University has shut down the makeshift tea stalls at Teacher-Student Centre (TSC), an everyday gathering commonplace for students and visitors, citing “security issues”.

This morning, students found the tea stalls closed at TSC, reports our campus correpsondent.

Contacted, tea vendors said they were asked by the proctorial body to close last night.

Dhaka University proctor Prof AKM Golam Rabbani said that all makeshift stalls have been ordered to shut down in campus to ensure hygienic food, security and proper environment for education.

He, however, did not mention how long the decision will be effective.

Tuhin Kanti Das, Dhaka University unit president of Chhatra Union, highly criticised the move and told The Daily Star that the decision was “un-democratic and imposed without an alternative”.

Notable, earlier on October 17, Dhaka University imposed a controversial decision to wrap up cultural and social activities at TSC by 8:00pm, which was later loosened in face of mass criticism.
