Coronation Street legend dies aged 91

CORONATION Street has lost another legendary star this week.

Doreen Keogh played the first barmaid of the Rover's Return, Concepta Hewitt from the first episodes of the soap in 1960, until 1964. 

The actress passed away peacefully aged 91 on New Year's Eve, according to her family.

John Whiston, creative director at ITV Studios has led the tributes to the star, who also starred in The Royle Family, Father Ted, and Ballykissangel.

He told The Mirror: "All at Coronation Street are sad to hear about the death of Doreen Keogh.

"There have been many barmaids in the Rovers over the years, dispensing pints and wisdom in equal measure. But Doreen played the first and so has a unique place not just in the history of the show but in the affection of all who watch The Street.

"Our thoughts are with the family as they mourn the passing of a wonderful person. And together with our audience we also mourn the passing of a very special actor."

PASSED AWAY: Doreen has died peacefully aged 91

Doreen later returned to Corrie several times in the 1970s, where she began dating her on-screen husband Ivan Beavis, who played Harry Hewitt. 

played neighbour Mary Carroll in The Royle Family, alongside Ricky Tomlinson, Sue Johnston and the late Caroline Aherne. 

She also had recurring roles in Father Ted and Cold Feet, and worked in theatre productions with The Royal Shakespeare Company.

BACK IN THE DAY: Doreen was a very successful actress

Doreen later married to actor Frank Singuineau, who she divorced in 1963. 

A notice posted in Ireland confirmed her passing at St Columba’s Hospital, Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny, and her funeral will take place on Thursday.

Her nieces and nephews also addressed the news in a statement: "Our auntie Doreen died peacefully in Thomastown, Co Kilkenny, Ireland, on New Year’s Eve after a long illness."
