Breaking News

Those of use driving westbound on I-80 near Appian Way in Pinole, Calif., on Thursday (Sept. 28, 1995) afternoon got a chance to see the new "Changable Message Sign" that read TEST TEST TEST. The signs that have been up for most of the year now are part of a larger project that includes 16 closed circuit TV cameras mounted along the freeway and loop detectors that monitor the flow of traffic from underneath the pavement. All of these together will help tell motorist what kind of traffic problems to expect and how to avoid them. The I-80 Operational Improvement Plans is expected to be finished in late 1998 or early 1999, according to Stan Giorgi, I-80 information officer. Letter writer suggests committing random acts of courtesy as an antidote to bad behavior on city streets and freeways.

Some thoughts on today’s traffic and how bad behavior on our city streets and freeways has gone viral: So, what can be done to reverse this phenomenon? We could start by committing random acts of courtesy. Yes. My suggestion is to simply try committing random acts of courtesy by yourself or with friends. I guarantee you will love it. It is impossible not to feel good after committing a random act of courtesy. Even more importantly – it has a ripple effect. What could be more important than saving lives?

It would be interesting to hear any ideas on how to raise public awareness on this issue. Maybe a letter writing campaign to Caltrans and state lawmakers? Why not make use of the freeway digital signs that read “Click it or ticket”? The RAC (random act of courtesy) attack.

Imagine a future study showing accident rates decreasing. Experts are unable to determine cause.
