The Audi Q2 is the German automaker's smallest compact SUV. Placed below the Q3, the Q2 with its crossover like design was launched last year with good responses especially from growing markets like China. And to appease the Chinese auto buyer even further, Audi has recently announced plans to launch a longer wheelbase version of the Q2 specially for the China domestic market. To make it an even more interesting proposition though, Audi seems to be preparing an all electric version of the long wheel base Q2 to be sold specifically in China. China is the largest electric car market in the world and last year sold over 3.86 lakh units witnessing a 50 per cent growth over the year before!
The new extended wheel base or long wheelbase Audi Q2 in its full electric avatar will most likely be called the Audi Q2 E-Tron and will have enough power to have a range of about 500 kilometers on a single charge. The full electric version will be sold alongside the 1.4-litre and 2-litre petrol engine powered Q2 that is already sold in China. The electric version will also most likely get all wheel drive as standard since it is easier to distribute power from an electric powerplant to all four wheels as compared to a conventional internal combustion engine.
While Audi had originally planned to bring the Q2 to India sometime in late 2017, the project was eventually delayed. With the push towards electric cars in the near future in India gaining momentum and quickly, offering the Q2 in India with an electric power plant would actually be quite the smart thing to do - apart from the standard petrol and diesel power plants of course.
