A group of New Zealanders came up with a creative plan to avoid a ban on drinking in public places. The lads built a structure at low tide in the Tairua estuary on the Coromandel peninsula. They even installed a picnic table and icebox for drinks. They smartly planned the same and got an exemption from an official liquor ban by citing that they were in international waters. As per reports of stuff.co.nz, on New Year’s Eve, they drank into the night while watching the fireworks. A ban on public drinking was in force in the area over the New Year period and those violating will face a fine of USD 250 or arrest. The ban was in force to deter violence during the holiday season. And local policemen were patrolling Saturday and Sunday to enforce the ban.

“That’s the one thing I absolutely love about the Coromandel: the inventive nature of the people. It’s about creativity, the legal reality is somewhat different,”Mayor Sandra Goudie, the mayor of Thames-Coromandel told smh.com.au.”That’s creative thinking – if I had known [about it] I probably would have joined them,” said local police commander Inspector John Kelly to BBC. Mr Saunders the person who uploaded the pictures of the group in one of the Facebook’s group told the BBC: “It was great to see some Kiwis having a bit of fun.”
The island was still visible and intact till Monday. This is not first time group of men did an extraordinary thing to get drinks. As per Ladbible report, in September a man named Alex buried a bottle of vodka ahead of the music festival for consumption after the event set up. “The planning of the burial was simple. We used Google maps and marked our spot on GPS so we knew where it would be. Then we waited, ” Alex told Ladbible. What are your views on the same? Let us know in the comments below.
