Mumbai, Jan 2: Hookah bars operating in Mumbai suburb Mulund are serving drugs, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Kirit Somaiya has claimed. Somaiya, in his letter to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), described these hookah bars as den of “unauthorised” activities while asking the civic body to take strong action against them.

“Requested BMC Commissioner Shri Ajoy Mehta to review the guidelines/implementation process of Rooftop Restaurants & Hooka Parlours which are become safety hazards and unauthorized dens of Mumbai,” Somaiya, who posted his letter addressed to BMC Commissioner, said in his statement on Twitter.

In another letter, which Kirit wrote in Marathi, the BJP leader listed names of hookah bars situated in Mulund which he claimed are serving drugs. “There should be a strict policy and action against such activities,” the Lok Sabha member from Mumbai North-East constituency said in the letter issued on Saturday, December 30.

The BMC has cracked down on eateries and pubs across Mumbai following the devastating fire at a pub situated in Kamala Mills area of Lower Parel. The fire at 1-Above pub on December 29 killed 14 people and left over 20 injured.
