This year the winter season is not in any mood to give us a break or a respite. After the news of Niagara Falls freezing, now the chill has enveloped Canada as well. You might think that animals that live in cold habitat might be comfortable with the temperatures dropping but that is not the case because if we go by the reports coming from Calgary Zoo in Canada, then the penguins there have also had to take shelter from the bitter cold. As reported, Zoo curator Malu Celli said that King Penguins – one of the five species that Calgary Zoo houses in western Alberta province are accustomed to chilly weather as compared to the Humboldt species that are more accustomed to the warmer climate. However, the zoo officials have moved the penguins indoors to shelter them and protect them from freezing temperature and chilly winds.
However, with the temperatures running below minus 30 degrees Celsius (minus 22 Fahrenheit) on New Year’s Eve and the cold wind that made one feel the temperature to be minus 40 degrees, Zoo officials decided to take action and protect the penguins against the harsh climate. The Calgary Zoo has a one five-month-old penguin chick which is still maturing and hence the officials drew the line on Sunday and set minus 25 as the temperature for the birds’ limit. New Year’s Eve Celebrations across Canada were moved indoors because of the brutal cold snap. Canada has been under an extreme cold alert for nearly a week now. Calgary Zoo also canceled their Zoolights shows on December 31, 2017. The country’s coldest temperature was registered in Eureka, in northern Nunavut territory, at minus 40.5 degrees whereas the highest was in Prince Rupert, in the western province of British Colombia, at minus 7.5 degrees.
