I was pleased to see the Dec. 25 opinion piece by Joey Travolta. It is about time special needs individuals are given recognition for their capabilities.
I had an uncle born in 1900 with Down syndrome who was put away in a state home in Sonoma when he was 5-years-old. He was murdered there when he was 21 years of age. I later drove a special ed bus for 12 years and was made aware of how much potential some of these students have. If given a task, some are greatly appreciative of the opportunity to work.
I have a friend whose grandson has been given a job at Tesla. It gives him a feeling of responsibility for himself and he’s being paid for a job well done. Thank you, Joey Travolta, for making people aware of these folks with gifts to offer others, if given the chance.
