The SPCA hopes that more of the 46,000 animals coming through its doors each year will find new homes. This summer, the Herald profiles animals that have been adopted and their owners as part of our My Rescue Pet series.

An ordinary day led to an extraordinary evening for one Auckland SPCA worker.

Arriving home in the pouring rain, she found a puppy hiding under her car.

After searching for a family that was nowhere to be seen, she took the puppy inside and kept her safe and warm overnight before taking her in to work the next day.

Co-worker Debbie Madden instantly fell in love with the pup.

Her own beloved dog had recently passed away and she saw the pup's arrival as a sign to take her home to join the family.

The puppy - now named Jazz - spends her time in the SPCA office where she is a valued member of the team and gets plenty of attention.

Jazz is a happy, energetic pup with an affection for squeaky toys and food.
