Illinois man faces charges after Iowa City assault

IOWA CITY — An Illinois man faces multiple charges after police say he entered a woman’s home and assaulted her.

According to Iowa City police criminal complaints, around 2:25 a.m. Jan. 1, 19-year-old Dylan R. Branecki, of Crystal Lake, Ill., entered a home in the 200 block of Church Street. Police said a female occupant of the home didn’t know Branecki and asked him to leave.

Branecki assaulted the woman, police said. She was later sent to the hospital to be treated for multiple cuts and abrasions to her face.

Police said Branecki remained on the scene and provided officers with a fake driver’s license. Branecki resisted arrest, requiring officers to use chemical spray and force to get him into handcuffs. Even after being taken into custody, Branecki remained combative and tried to kick and spit on officers, police said. He was taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for an evaluation before being booked at the Johnson County Jail.

Branecki faces charges of assault causing bodily injury, assault on peace officers, possession of a fake ID, interference with official acts and two counts of trespass causing injury or damage. Each offense except the interference charge is a serious misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail.
