How Trump inspired this must-see show

DONALD Trump can be thanked for what could be the best show to be released in recent months.

The release of the fourth season of Black Mirror on Netflix on December 29 may have flown under the radar, but one episode already has people talking.

In a nutshell, Black Mirror is a science fiction series created by Charlie Brooker and looks at the unexpected consequences of our advancing technology.

Each episode is stand-alone, so you can easily jump in and out.

And if you need to start with one episode, then make it Hang The DJ.

In this ep, couples are matched together by an app. They get told they have a date and then turn up to the restaurant to meet their new partner.

The app does everything for you. Orders your dinner at the date. Lines up your accommodation for the duration of the relationship.

And if the couples want, they can find out how long the relationship will last.

The relationship could be 12 hours, it could be five years.

Eventually, The System, who you can talk to and ask questions along the way, will find your perfect partner.

Amy and Frank are matched together, but it's only for 12 hours. They feel a connection, but after their brief encounter have to endure a series of relationships with other people.

Amy is stuck in a series of short-term meaningless sexual encounters, while Frank has to endure a year with a woman he despises.

But while the app continues to keep them apart, will they break free and stay together?

And just when you're expecting a predictable end, you get something out of left field in typical Black Mirror fashion.

Like the standout ep from season three San Junipero, Hang The DJ has a killer twist at the end that'll have you thinking for days.

San Junipero, about two women who fall in love in a virtual reality, won an Emmy and is a fans' favourite.

But Hang The DJ (named after a line from The Smiths track Panic) may just surpass it.

"It was inevitable then that another romantic hour would make its way into the series after the reception of San Junipero. That episode is the stellar, standout Hang The DJ," the Daily Beast reports.

"The episode is memorable because it's tinged with some of the horror of technology controlling every aspect of our lives, but it's ultimately a hopeful story."

And the ending already has people talking. It was only released a couple of days ago, but there is already a lot online about what the ending actually means. (Spoilers in this link.)

Brooker told the Mirror that the episode is as close as Black Mirror will get to a rom-com.

"It's Spotify for relationships," he said.

"If you had a playlist telling you all the relationships you'd have in your life, in order, that's sort of what's going on."

Hang The DJ is undoubtably more uplifting than a lot of the previous Black Mirror episodes.

It's something Brooker did intentionally. And you can thank Donald Trump for that.

"This season, the writing of it started in July 2016, so there were episodes being written all through the American election ... and everything was looking horrible," Brooker said last month.

"I genuinely thought, I don't know what state the world's going to be in by the time these [episodes] appear, and I don't know how much appetite there will be for nothing but bleak nihilism. If you're living in a dystopia, you don't necessarily want to look at another one. So I sort of thought, let's maybe not make them all [depressing]."

So thanks Trump, for your part in one of the best shows streaming at the moment.
