UK weather WARNING: ‘Danger to life’ 80mph winds as Britons return from New Year break

A YELLOW warning has been issued as winds of up to 80mph have been forecast for parts of the UK.

After a dry, cold morning rain coming in from the west is forecast to bring snow across the northern hills and strong winds to the rest of the country.

The Met Office has issued the yellow warning for Yorkshire and northern England, southern parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland from 6pm on Tuesday to 8am on Wednesday as Storm Eleanor is set to batter Britain.

It said: “A spell of strong winds is expected later Tuesday, overnight into Wednesday morning.

“Combined with a period of high tides, it is likely that some western coastal communities will be affected by large waves and spray, and there is a small chance that injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown on to sea fronts, roads and coastal properties.

“Power cuts and disruption to other services (mobile phones for example) may occur, and there is a small chance of transport disruption or cancellation of public transport.”

The Met Office’s chief forecaster added: “A deepening area of low pressure is expected to track northeastwards across the northern half of the UK.

“This will most likely bring a spell of very strong winds to Northern Ireland later Tuesday, which will then move northeastwards across parts of southern Scotland and Northern England before clearing into the North Sea early on Wednesday.

“There is however still a lot of uncertainty over the exact track that the low pressure will take and hence where precisely the strongest winds will be. Gales with gusts of 60 to 70 mph are likely, whilst some western coastal areas have a chance of seeing gusts of 80 mph.

Winds of up to 80mph are forecast

The Environment Agency (EA) has issued 56 flood alerts across the entire country with a more serious flood warning in central England.

It comes after parts of the UK were batered by Storm Dylan on New Year’s Day.

Bookmakers are also backing January 2018 to be the coldest on record in the UK.

As temperatures plummet across the UK, bookmakers have seen a flurry of bets predicting next month will end as the coldest January in history.

Coral is offering 2-1 odds on January to be the coldest on record, while the bookie also has 5-1 odds on 2018 to be the coldest year ever.

Coral’s John Hill said: “It looks as though temperatures are going to continue to fall. That has prompted a flurry of bets for next month to end as the coldest ever January in the UK, while the odds have been slashed on the back of this gamble.”
