CHOCOLAY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WLUC) - If the cold gloomy weather has you down, perhaps some birds can brighten your view. There are plenty of opportunities to bird watch, even though winter is in full effect.
The area has several species of winter birds including Woodpeckers, Chickadees, Blue Jays and more. The natural food source for many birds, things like worms, fruit and seeds, is often difficult to locate come winter.
If you'd like to attract beautiful birds to your yard, one local expert says there are three things to focus on.
"Just like any other time of year birds need shelter, food and water," said Jerry Maynard from the Chocolay Raptor Center. "For the shelter you can put up bird houses, for food put out bird feeders and black oil sunflower seeds and lastly is water, so you can buy little warmers to put in a birdbath to keep it from freezing up and make water available year round."
Maynard also said there are many other informational resources both online and in the area.
