The year 2018 has seen its first murder, coming just hours after 2017’s last murder – that of Fredrick Smith on Antelope Street Extension.
The new year’s first victim is Leon Garcia, who was stabbed multiple times in the chest and abdomen sometime around 3:30 this morning on Barrack Road.
Police say that Garcia was walking along with Raheem Reed and others on Barrack Road from the direction of Newtown Barracks when two men attacked them from behind. One of the men reportedly began to stab Garcia, who collapsed on the street, while his friends ran back towards a police check point stationed on Barrack Road at its junction with Victoria Street.
When Reed realised that Garcia had collapsed, he went to his aid, but the attackers then pounced on him and he too suffered stab wound to the left side of his upper rib cage.
Garcia died while receiving medical treatment at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH), and police are looking for two suspects.
