SOUTH JACKSONVILLE — Officers seized 1,000 pounds of marijuana worth $5 million from two Texas men on New Year's Eve, police said.
Morgan County Sheriff’s office said in a news release that a deputy made contact with the two men, who were driving an RV, at about 9:54 a.m. Sunday at Loves Truck Stop in South Jacksonville. The release did not say how or why the deputy came into contact with the men.
After speaking with them, the deputy called an Illinois State Police trooper and his K-9. The men consented to a search of the vehicle, inside which officers found the load of pot, according to police.
Muhammad Usama, 21, and Syed Fraz Ahmad, 43, both of Houston, Texas, were taken into custody and charged with cannabis trafficking. They were being held without bond at the Morgan County Detention Center. They face a Feb. 13 court date.
