NFL Draft 2018: What are the Giants' options with the No. 2 pick?

It worked out pretty well the last time the Giants had the second pick in the NFL Draft. The Giants landed Hall of Fame linebacker Lawrence Taylor with the No. 2 pick in the 1981 draft.

The good news for the Giants is they were successful enough over the next 35 years to never have such a high pick again. But that luck ran out with this season's 3-13 debacle, so the Giants once again find themselves in possession of the No. 2 pick.

There will be four months of speculation about who the Giants will take at No. 2. Here's a first glance at their options:

Darnold or Rosen?
NCAA Football: UCLA at Southern California
Kelvin Kuo | USA TODAY Sports

UCLA's Josh Rosen and USC's Sam Darnold were considered the top quarterback prospects entering this season. There are more questions now, especially about Darnold.

Darnold, 20, took a step back in his second season as a starter, culminating in a rough showing in USC's 24-7 loss to Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl on Friday. Darnold has two years of eligibility remaining and there's a realistic chance that he returns to USC for another season of development.

Rosen, 20, also has a year of eligibility remaining, but it would be a surprise if he doesn't declare for the draft before the Jan. 15 deadline. Rosen is the most polished quarterback prospect on the field, but there are some concerns about his attitude and the two concussions he suffered this season.

If the Giants are intent on taking a quarterback — and it should be a priority with Eli Manning set to turn 37 on Wednesday — the doomsday scenario would be if Darnold stays in school and Rosen goes to the Browns with the first pick.

If Rosen and Darnold declare for the draft, the Giants will be in position to pick Manning's successor, assuming they're high on both quarterbacks.

The other QBs

I'm not high on the other top quarterbacks (at least not at No. 2), but we don't know how new Giants general manager Dave Gettleman feels, so here's a breakdown:

Wyoming's Josh Allen may be the most physically gifted quarterback in this class, with a rocket arm and a 6-foot-5, 233-pound frame. But accuracy concerns and poor showings against top competition are major red flags.

Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield has been the best player in college football season. But the road to the NFL is littered with short quarterbacks (Mayfield is generously listed at 6-1) who posted gaudy numbers in gimmicky college offenses but couldn't translate to the next level. And can anyone really imagine the Giants handing the baton from the stoic Manning to the volatile Mayfield?

Louisville's Lamar Jackson is an absolutely electric athlete, but there's questions if he'll even play quarterback in the NFL. There's no way he'll be in consideration with the second pick.
