Environment Canada said Toronto, the GTA and much of central Ontario should expect the rest of the first week of 2018 with a “multi-day episode of very cold wind chills.”
The alert, issued New Year’s Day Monday, now covers York and Durham Regions, along with Barrie and Peterborough and confirms temperatures may have felt like –30C in some areas with the wind chill on Monday morning.

“Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill,” the weather agency warned.
Environment Canada said Pearson Airport broke cold temperature record Monday morning going back 50 years, with a reading of -22.6C, shattering the previous record of -21.1C, set in 1968.
Kitchener-Waterloo and Ottawa also broke longstanding records.

The deep freeze in Toronto is expected to last for the rest of the week, according to Environment Canada. Tuesday will see only a high of -8C, with the mercury continuing to dip to -10C on Wednesday and -15C on Thursday and Friday.
